The biggest thing that students ask is "how are we going to use this in the real world?"  My answer to that is "let me SHOW you!"  It is imparative that students experience these applications inside of the classroom so that they can understand those real world concepts... like making change, buying property, keeping a check book, shopping at a store, computing tax, and so much more. I try to take one day every two weeks or so to allow them to experience real world Algebra.  Not only does it make them appreciate math so much more, but it seems to make it a tad more fun!!!
